Veil

Contemporary Egyptian Choreography by Eileen Williams, Latin Ballet Recital 2009 Music: Merriman, track 4 (Dancer with yellow costume on cover) 3: 07 minutes (veil/fast/slow dance)

  1. :08 8 cts Entrance. R-L-R, L-R-L, repeat (when drum comes in). Veil is behind body.
  2. Section One--Veil

  3. :12 32 cts Arabesque to the side. R step, arabesque L, cross L over R, step L, step R. Repeat starting with step L, arabesque R. CW three step turn, hold in place. Shoulder shimmy, body wave down, hip shimmy. Repeat sequence starting L. Second time: hip shimmy, body wave up, shoulder shimmy. Weight is on R foot.
  4. :29 32 cts Arabesque behind with waterfall veil. L leg swings behind R, step L-R-L, R leg swings behind L, step R- L- R, 3 step turn CCW (L-R-L), bring veil to the front over R shoulder, loop veil to floor, loop veil up and behind over R shoulder. Repeat sequence starting R leg swings behind. 3 step turn CW. Waterfall veil comes over L shoulder. End with weight on L.
  5. :46 12 cts Step-together-step segue. Moving in CCW circle, R-L-R, L-R-L, step R, step L, repeat sequence to come back to facing audience.
  6. :53 32 cts Arabesque behind with butterfly veil. R foot swings behind, step R-L-R, repeat L swings behind. 3 step CW turn (R-L-R), bring veil over L shoulder to the front, make a butterfly veil, drop R wing, 3 step CW, when you face front again pick up R wing, drop L wing. 3 step turn CCW. When face front again, switch wings simultaneously (pick up L, drop R, pick up R, drop L, pick up L, drop R). 3 step turn CW with R wing dropped. When face front again, pick up R wing, arms up high behind head, veil is draped over front of body and framing face.
  7. 1:10 12 cts Step-together-step segue. R step behind L, R-L-R, L-R-L, pivot CW to face the back step R, step L, repeat sequence pivoting to face audience. End with weight on L in dancer’s pose.
  8. 1:16 16 cts Drop –kick, toss veil. R foot free, weight is on L facing L diagonal. Drop kick 2x. Walk upstage (to the back) starting with R foot, toss veil at back of stage, return to position.

    Section Two--Fast

  10. 1:23 32 cts Step, hip lift, walk, figure 8 hip loops forward and back. Step R, L hip lift (L foot out to the side not in front) (R arm overhead, L hand on R hip), repeat stepping L (L hand behind head, R hand on L hip). 4 step walk (R-L-R-L) in CW circle, end with R profile facing audience (while walking R hand moves up from hip to place top of hand just under L elbow). R hip loops forward, back, forward (move upstage away from audience while looping hip), step R, pivot ¼ turn on R to face audience; at same time bring L leg up so L knee is bent and foot is near R knee (arms/hands come overhead to a “V” on pivot). Repeat sequence starting with step L. End facing audience with R foot free and arms overhead.
  11. 1:39 32 cts Step ball change with broken wrists, turn, shoulder rolls. Step R-L-R (arms overhead, hands over R shoulder, wrists are bent), step L-R-L (arms overhead, hands over L shoulder). Step R-L-R (arms come down L side of body to hip level cross to R hip, hands at R hip during R-L-R). Step L-R-L (arms at hip level, hands at L hip. Hands come up to shoulder level, just before turn.) 3 step turn CW, end in a demi-plie´ lunge (L foot slightly behind R, weight on R) facing R diagonal. Shoulder roll/snake arms to come to standing. Repeat entire sequence starting L-R-L (arms at hip level, hands by L hip. Switch hands to R hip, then up the R side of the body to overhead, hands overhead on L side, hands overhead on R side). Hands come back down to shoulder level just before the 3 step CCW turn. Come out of turn facing L diagonal. End with weight on L.
  12. 1:54 20 cts Step together step to the side, turn, hip variations, ta-da turn. Step together step (R-L-R) moving R (arms out at shoulder level). Little lunge back with L foot behind R, (L toes on floor), step R in place. (R hand in front at hip level, L arm overhead, behind head). Repeat sequence with step together step starting L. 4 step walk (R-L-R-L) in CW circle end with R profile facing audience (while walking L hand drops down behind head, R hand curves over head, under chin and ends meeting L hand behind L ear). Hip variations using R hip/foot (forward, back, forward, back, center. Hands/arms stay behind L ear during hip variations. End with weight on R foot. L foot crosses R in front, pivot on R for ta-da turn, switch weight to L as finish pivot. Hands follow outside body line from hip to overhead while turning.

    Section Three--Slow

  14. 2:03 32 cts Undulate, maya vertical hip loop, reverse undulation in a box. Undulate moving R 2x, R maya (vertical) hip loop, reverse undulation (belly starts the movement). ¼ turn CW to face stage R. Repeat undulating L. ¼ turn CW to face upstage (the back). Repeat undulating R. ¼ turn CW to face stage L. Repeat undulating L. ¼ turn CW to face downstage (audience). End with weight on L.
  15. 2:21 16 cts Scissors step, inside out circle, forward and back horizontal figure 8. Step R forward, step L in place, step R back, step L in place (scissors), step R forward, pivot on R CCW to face back (weight stays on R foot), snake arms (R-L). (During scissors arms open in welcome, arms pull back to heart center, arms open with palms pushed toward audience, then arms open to shoulder level during pivot). L hip loop (horizontal loop, start CCW loop from inside) forward as stepping forward on L, step R in place, L loop hip (horizontal loop, start CW loop from inside) to back, step R in place, repeat hip loops L and R moving body CW each time you step to end facing front. R hand at forehead, L arm is out at shoulder level. End with L foot free.
  16. 2:29 32 cts Maya hip loop, undulation, two step turn. L hip loop (vertical loop), 2x, undulate 1x to L front diagonal, 2 step turn CW (R-L) to face back, repeat sequence starting with R hip loops. End facing downstage to audience, L foot free.
  17. 2:38 16cts Scissors step, inside out circle, forward and back figure 8. Step L forward, step R in place, step L back, step R in place (scissors), step L forward, pivot on L CW to face back (weight stays on L foot), snake arms (R-L). Same arm sequence as above. R hip loop (horizontal loop, start CW loop from inside) forward as stepping slightly forward on R, step L in place, R hip loop to back (horizontal loop, start CCW loop from inside), step L in place, repeat hip loops forward and back moving body CCW each time to face front. End with R foot free.
  18. 2:47 16 cts Hip circle, undulate (rock) back. Step R-L-R-pause to the R, layer a small hip circle on top of stepping. Rock back and forward L-R-L-R, laying body undulation on movement. L foot slightly behind R during rock back. Repeat sequence starting L-R-L, moving L. Finish entire combination even though music has changed and music is taxim.
  19. 2:55 8 ct Flamenco turn to dancer’s pose, Persian arms, drop-kick, exit. Cross R foot over L, pivot turn CCW shifting weight to R. Plie´ before beginning turn. Turn dramatically with bent knees, arms come up center line of body while turning. End with weight on R, L profile facing audience, slightly arched back. Persian arms (snake arms in front rather than to sides of body) moving R arm up, L arm up, R arm up, open arms so L hand frames L hip and R hand overhead. While arms are opening, straighten body upright. End in dancer’s pose with weight on R. Drop kick L leg, 2x. Exit stage starting L foot.
